Association analysis among vegetative traits in forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor).

A total of 47 lines comprising forage sorghum male sterile lines 94001-A, 94002-A, 94003-A, 94031-A and AKMS 14-A and 7 Sudan grass testers including their 35 crosses were studied to study the interrelations between forage yield and dry matter yield with various vegetative traits. Data were recorded for plant height, number of tillers, stem thickness, leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf breadth, leaf:stem ratio and green forage yield. Dry matter yield showed highly significant positive correlation coefficients with green forage yield and also with leaves per plant, leaf length and leaf breadth; however, these characters showed negative phenotypic correlation coefficient with leaf:stem ration. Genotypic correlation coefficients were higher in magnitude than the corresponding phenotypic correlation coefficients. Path coefficients showed direct and indirect effects of various traits on dry matter yield. Only green forage yield had high direct effect on dry matter yield. Leaf length, leaves per plant, leaf breadth, plant height and stem thickness had positive indirect effects on dry matter yield through green forage yield.
