Performance of arable crops in the initial years under rainfed agri-silvi-horticultural systems in Haryana

A field experiment was conducted at Research Farm of CCS HAU, Regional Research Station, Bawal to study the compatibility of pearlmillet, clusterbean, raya and chickpea crops in association with silvi-horticulture system of Dalbergia sissoo, Azadirachta indica, Morus alba and Emblica officinalis. Studies carried out under rainfed conditions showed that average grain and straw yields as well as gross returns of all the crops in silvi-horticulture systems were statistically at par to their sole cropping upto initial four years of study. The net returns of all crops decreased appreciably under silvi-horticulture systems as compared to sole cropping owing to average establishment cost of Rs.3812 ha~(-1) yr~(-1). The silvi-horticulture system did not offer any competition with the associated arable crops. Conservation of rain water in Kharif and raising of raya in Rabi season was found to be most economical practice. Among forest and fruit trees, D. sissoo performed better than other species in termsof growth.
