With examples from geography, this article presents a theoretical foundation for excursions as an approach to learning. The article presents the notion of learning by experience and argues that, combined with a wide concept of learning, this offers a solid foundation and fruitful perspective for the excursion as a method of learning. Experience is holistic in nature and is therefore especially suitable as an approach for the extensive learning that an excursion invites. The article also suggests some values that should be fundamental for an excursion to a country of a different culture. These values are summed up in the concept of human dignity. The article takes as its background excursions to Kenya for teacher training students. The article is also relevant for other types of students and for different destinations, as well as for other subjects and for learning in general.
