Slowly phasing out a long-lived veterinary career: a personal story

In my mid 5Os, I decided to take a different "tack" in my career in food animal veterinary medicine. Translation: I still had the desire to participate in the progressive West Central Iowa practice to which I had devoted more than 25 years, but not as a full-lime corporate partner, which, of course, involved after hours, weekend, holiday duties, and management. In this particular business structure, the partners own the entire practice--inventory, vehicles, equipment, and real estate. So the processagreed upon--as spelled out in the articles of incorporation--was to completely sell out my appraised share with payment deferred over four years. On the professional staff at the time were three other partners in a six-person group. It was previously agreed that I would continue in some part-time status, but with the level of participation not yet established. The initial schedule was to just be "on call" whenever they needed me. That approach lasted one day.
