A1-week-old Holstein heifer was presented with a history of a soft mass on the top of her head since birth. The calf was considered valuable genetically, and the owners requested surgical correction of the problem. Physical exam was within normal limits with the exception of a 1-cm diameter, flucturant, and hairless mass on the poll (Fig 1). The mass protruded approximately 1.5 cm from the surface of the skull, and a 1.5-em diameter defect in the skull was palpable at the base of the mass. The masspulsated with the same rate and rhythm as the heartbeat. A presumptive diagnosis of meningocele was made.
