New southern soybean tops yield trials

This conventional variety, USG 5601T, will be available to growers in 2003. Soybean growers across the Southeast and Mid-South will have a new conventional soybean variety to consider in their variety selection next year. A high-yielding Maturity Group (MG) V cultivar, developed in the University of Tennessee soybean breeding program as TN96-58, will be marketed by UniSouth Genetics as USG 5601T. "We are seeing such a large trend of farmers going to Roundup Ready soybeans, use of conventional varieties is very limited," says David Mckinney of UniSouth Genetics, based in Nashville, Tenn. "Not many people were interested in investing in another conventional variety because they did not know what the demand might be in the marketplace. USG 5601T is avery good variety, and we think it will do well in this area.
