Keep corn out of harm's way: crop safety is an important consideration when applying postemergence herbicides on corn

Postemergence herbicides have a lot to offer when it comes to stopping weeds in Kentucky cornfields. But many of the nearly two dozen products labeled in the state also carry the risk of causing crop injury if they're not properly applied. Jim Martin, extension weed control specialist at the University of Kentucky's Princeton research center, has seen numerous examples of corn "dinged" by postemergence herbicides over the years. In the vast majority of cases, crop injury was linked to applications made over the top of the canopy when corn was bigger than the maximum height or growth stage restriction specified on the label.
