The soybean aphid bears close watching, but chances of it posing a yield threat to Kentucky's 2001 crop are extremely remote. Late last summer, soybean producers in parts of the north-central region discovered that some of their fields were infestedwith an aphid species they didn't recognize. Entomologists soon identified the insect as the soybean aphid, a species previously unknown in the United States. By the time the 2000 growing season was over, this new aphid had been found in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin and Kentucky. The specimens collected in Kentucky came from Hardin, Fulton and Fayette counties. However, experts say it was probably more widespread in the state than that evidence indicated.
