Weigh all the factors carefully before you rip out a thin corn stand and start over. Every year some Kentucky corn growers find themselves faced with the difficult decision about replanting less-than-perfect stands. But before you hitch up the planter and start over again, make sure the economics of doing that stack up in your favor. Jim Herbek, extension grain crops specialist at the University of Kentucky's (UK) Princeton research center, concedes that a thin stand can be disheartening to look at.However, he says in many situations lower plant populations derived from early planting dates still may offer more yield potential than thicker stands achieved by replanting at later dates.
