Corn color choices: Union County corn growers tell why they grow both yellow and white corn

Farmers there can share with you firsthand knowledge from seeding to selling. Union County continues to be thetop corn county in Kentucky. For 2001, there were 12,276,000 bushels produced from 79,200 acres yielding 155 bushels per acre. "If we don't get at least 150 bushels of corn per acre, we feel we have failed," says Willard Greenwell, who farms over 6,000 acres of corn and 3,000 acres of soybeans with his sons, Chris and Jerry Joe, at Greenwell Farms. Jim McElroy farms corn, soybeans and wheat with his son, Doug, and father, Sam, who was 81 years of age last month and still going strong. Their 5,000 acresare split about 50-50 between corn and soybeans, and the corn is divided about even between yellow and white. The McElroys' corn production also averages at or above the 150-bushel mark. With improved white varieties in recent years, both farmers find their yellow and white varieties yield about the same production per acre.
