Strain gauge torque transducers proposed for quasistatic applications with alternating torque loading are calibrated quasi-statically using alternating torques. In this paper we propose an alternative method, namely how to derive the alternating torque calibration curve efficiently from the curves for pure clockwise and anti-clockwise torque calibration. Some particular aspects of the interpretation of the calibration results and the subsequent use of these transducers will be discussed. The hysteresis at the zero point, denoted mechanical remanence, provides information about the uncertainty of measurement for loading with alternating torques and therefore about the suitability of a transducer for this application. When such a transducer is used, studies to determine the position of the zero point, to which the results of the measurement are related, are generally not carried out. In consequence, twice the value of the hysteresis determined for the alternating torque calibration must be expected.
