Global tea prices eased again in January, as moderate gains in Colombo were offset by lower prices in Mombasa and Calcutta. The Three Auction Average fell to US2.92dollar per kg - down 5 cents from December but still US0.74dollar higher than the samemonth last year . At the Colombo auction, prices in December averaged US3.41 dollar per kg -up 15 cents from the previous month and almost a dollar higher than the same month last year. At the Calcutta auction, average prices fell back to US2.51dollar per kg - down by 16 cents from the previous month but in line with the usual seasonal decline. At Mombasa, prices slipped back to US2.84dollar per kg - down 13 cents from the previous month's record high.
