RWANDA AIMS FOR TEA INDUSTRY TRANSFORMATION

Rwanda has announced an ambitious set of targets for the coming decade as it looks to transform itself into a leading supplier of high quality branded tea products. Already known as a producer of high quality teas, the country is now looking to profitfrom this reputation by shifting away from bulk tea exports and building up direct sales of higher value products. This is hoped to result in a doubling of sector earnings from US32 million dollar in 2007 to US$70 mln in 2012. Over the same period, teaproduction is forecast to rise from 23,000 tonnes to 36,000 tonnes.
