The growth characteristics of bamboo used for making handicrafts

The natural bamboo forest, which is the source of the raw material for making handicrafts, requires bamboo culms with specific characteristics for the way they will be used. Five bamboo species i.e. bambu haur {Bambusa vulgaris v. vitata Schard.)， bambu tali {Gigantochloa apus Kurz.), bambu andong (G. pseudoarundinaceae Widjaja), bambu temen (G. verticillata Kurz.) and bambu hitam (G. atroviolaceae Widjaja) were investigated at Ciamis and Tasikmalaya regions, West Java. The objective of this study was to know their growth characteristics covering clump, culm and internodes. Collected data consisted of nine growth parameters namely number of culm/clump, circumference of clumps, height, diameter and weight of each culm, number, length and diameter ofeach internode, and thickness of culm wall. Data were statistically analyzed by HSD-test. The results showed that almost all parameters were insignificant statistically, except clumps density.
