Modeling height-diameter relationship for bamboo, Phyllostachys bambusoides

Alarge number of height-diameter models were compared based on a data set of 520 felled culms for one of the largest bamboo species, Phyllostachys bambusoides Sieb. et Zucc. collected from four different regions in Kyushu island, western Japan. As thediameter at breast height increased, the culm height became taller and the asymptotic culm height was not found. Among the twenty-three height-diameter models, a simple allometric power equation showed the significant parameters, the smallest AIC and the homogeneous error variance, indicating that this model gave the most satisfactory predictor of the culm height for P. bambusoides. The nonlinear extra sum of squares method revealed no difference in height-diameter model among the four regions. The mean error and root mean square error for the resulting simple allometric equation were 0.0 m and 0.9 m, respectively. Differences in the culm heights predicted by the simple allometric equations determined in this study and previous studies were less than0.3 m. These results suggested that the height-diameter model presented here might be able to apply to P. bambusoides grown in various regions.
