Analysis of protein expression during internodal elongation of Moso-bamboo

Bamboos are characterized by their rapid growth. However little of the mechanism is known on the molecular level and no database is available so far. In this study, to investigate the elongation mechanism, we focused on proteins and their different expression patterns from various bamboo internodes on different growth stages. Using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) and image analysis software, four proteins were found highly accumulating in elongating tissues. After MALDI/TOF MS and MS/MS analyses, these four proteins were identified successfully as cytosolic fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase 1 (PpAldCl), WD-repeat protein (PpWD), and two fragments of EF-2 (PpEF-2) using rice proteome database. Our results suggest that during elongation, cellular activities are activated and PpAldCl-mediated glycolytic pathway may be important.
