Jajang aya is one of genus Gigantochloa group named Jajang of local name in Panglipuran Village which is intensively used by the local people for making walls. The identification of this group is very difficult because of people to recognize about 7 varieties of Jajang in this village. This bamboo group is also very difficult to occur flowering phenomenon, so that the taxonomical identification of this bamboo is very difficult. Because, a taxo-nomic study using molecular systematic should be proposed, in order to understand the status of this group. Due to the intensive usage of this Jajang aya, a preliminary study on the population of this bamboo has been done. Six plots of 25 by 10 m were set up using transect methods to understand the populationof this bamboo. Through this study it is found that the total number of culm/ha is the highest (8,240 culm/ha) in Plot 1, but the number of clump is higher in Plot 2. The total number of the old culm is also higher in Plot 1 (4,120 culm/ha) than that inplot 2 (3,720 culm/ha). Although the total of old culm is lower in Plot 2, the production of Jajang aya in Plot 2 is still higher (1,860 culm/yr./ha). However, the highest regeneration is found in Plot 1 and followed by Plot 6. The production per hectareis higher in Plot 2, but the regeneration is low because the total of young culm is very low. It is suggested that over harvesting may cause to decrease the degradation of population in future. A further experiment by permanent plots should be proposedto monitor the sustainable harvesting.
