Finnish private enforcement of competition law has been very active during the last few years. Two cases in particular have had a significant impact on national case law and may also have precedent value in other European Union Member States. In the first case, the District Court of Helsinki awarded a number of municipalities with a total of ?60m in damages resulting from a cartel in the Finnish asphalt paving market. The other case, where rulings on the principal claims are yet to be made, involves hundreds of plaintiffs, such as the Finnish State, several municipalities and private forest owners, claiming damages for a cartel operated in the Finnish raw timber purchase market. This article will discuss some of the main aspects of the cases.
