Highlights of the latest U.S.D.A. mink report

Mink pelt production for 2002 in the U.S. totaled 2.60 million pelts, up 1 percent from 2001, according to the July 15 annual mink report issued by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, USDA. Wisconsin, the major mink-producing state, produced 685,000 pelts. Color class definitions have changed for 2002 production and female mink bred in 2003. By color class, the number of pelts as a percent of the total U.S. production in 2002 follows: Black - 37.1 percent; Mahogany - 21.7 percent; Blue Iris - 19.8 percent; Sapphire - 7.0 percent; Demi/Wild - 5.8 percent. The remaining color classes accounted for 8.6 percent.
