Collectively, the farmers in Yingbin Bay have created a large, integrated culture system that effectively reduces nutrient concentrations. The farmers improve water quality for shrimp by integrating seaweed and abalone culture into their operations. The farms cycle pond water through seaweed prior to using it for shrimp grow-out. The seaweed can be used for abalone production. Development of similar traditional systems could assist in increasing the sustainability of aquaculture, improving environmental quality and changing public perceptions.
