Once the world leader in shrimp-farming productivity, Brazil faced a down period that is being overcome by better farm management and a major shift to domestic marketing. Through improved seed quality and cage culture technology, tilapia are the leading aquaculture species in the country. Tambaqui, pacu and several catfish species are also farmed. New programs should increase shellfish production.
