While much has been published about internal auditing and auditing by certification bodies, a vital link in the chain of confidence has received scant publicity - how do accreditation bodies establish that certification body auditors are up to the job? An experienced accreditation body auditor presents a straightforward approach drawn from good practice observed worldwide. It has become clear that many certification bodies have found difficulty in making the transition from the old qualification approach for auditors that was previously specified in withdrawn stan-ards - such as ISO 10011-2 for quality management system (QMS) auditors and ISO 14012 for environmental management system (EMS) auditors - to the competence approach taken by ISO 19011:2002, Guidelines for quality and/or environmental management systems auditing.
