Olle Sturen passes away

ISO has learned with great sadness of the disappearance of one of the key figures in its history, that of former ISO Secretary-General, Olle Sturen, who died on 16 May 2003 in the south of Spain, where he had spent his retirement. His term of office as Secretary-General ran from September 1968 to April 1986; at the time he retired, the ISO Bulletin wrote in May 1986: "He has been witness to the total of ISO's history, and has himself been part of the remarkable and sustained growth in ISO's activities." A good number of colleagues who worked with Olle Sturen, and watched ISO grow in stature and recognition under his mandate, are still with the ISO Central Secretariat today, and recall with fondness and nostalgia the powerful and kindly figure who had a very clear idea of where he thought ISO should head- and took it there.
