Histochemical investigations of reactive oxygen species demonstrated that H202 takes part in mechanisms of chemically induced resistance (CIR) and race-cultivar-specific resistance. It is suggested that these investigations confirmed the hypothesisthat the phenotype of CIR in barley is a phenocopy of a resistance mechanism conferred by specific genes for powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis) resistance. In rice, cells undergoing cell death in response to attack by Magnaporthe grisea accumulated H2O2,but no reactive oxygen species were detected after infection in compatible or incompatible reactions of the plants with the fungus.
