摘要

This issue of Allergy and Immunology Clinics of North America is in memory of our friend and colleague, Andrew Szczeklik. Those of us who had the pleasure of knowing this wonderful physician and scientist will remember him for many things: friendships, combined projects, discoveries, discussions, and active collaborations with many scientists around the world. This issue focuses on Andrew's life passion, namely, the questions about why aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) behave in such peculiar ways when compared to other drug molecules. The mixture of pharmacologic pseudo-allergic effects and specific stimulation of key parts of the immune system that generate allergic reactions is truly unique among medications used by humans. Andrew was, from the beginning of this quest, a driving force in answering most of these basic and clinical questions. Indeed, the 2 guest editors cannot think of any investigator in the past 40 years that has contributed more to this field of science than Andrew Szczeklik.
