The world poultry meat market continues to be affected by the highly pathogenic avian 'flu (Al) H5N1 virus. After the initial contraction in production, consumption and trade following the outbreaks in 2003-2005 the industry now seems more able to weather the impact of Al. Production, trade and particularly consumption now seem to be affected to a lesser degree and HPAI has opened new trade opportunities for some countries. The share of processed poultry as a proportion of global exports has also risen due to Al, partly in response to consumer demand for safe poultry meat.
