The highly pathogenic avian influenza (Al) virus H5N1 has continued to spread, impacting on consumption, production and trade. However, the resilience of the international market is clear as global poultry consumption continues to rise at the expenseof beef. Although some markets closed to imports due to Al related trade bans, others opened with Asian and African markets becoming more important. Greater emphasis is being placed on processed products as these carry minimal risk for disease transmission and have also been exempt from Al related trade bans. One positive outcome of the Al situation has been the adoption of policies to protect poultry and the industry, including tighter sanitary controls and stronger domestic regulation.
