World production of sheep and goat meat is estimated to have risen by four per cent in 2005 to 13.03 million tonnes. The largest expansion in output was in China, up eight per cent. The increase in production in Oceania in 2005 was far greater than inEurope. In New Zealand increased production facilitated a rise in sheep meat exports so that 97 per cent of New Zealand's quota with the EU was used. There was also an increase in exports of mutton to emerging markets. The rise in Australian sheep meatproduction resulted in a record level of exports, The global environment for Australian lamb sales was again unusually positive in 2005, with disease related trade restrictions on other meat supplying countries adding to an already tight market.
