Brazil overtook the US in 2004 to become the world's leading exporter of broiler meat. Recent forecasts from USDA point towards Brazil holding on to this position. Brazil was one of the main beneficiaries from the avian influenza (AI) crisis last year, which affected many trade flows. In 2004 processed poultry meat production increased significantly as suppliers adjusted to the bans on fresh/frozen poultry meat. Production is still expected to be disrupted in 2005 due to the effects of avian 'flu although recovery in some areas will continue. Increased demand from consuming countries and increased interest from suppliers wishing to minimise market risk from Al-related bans will influence production and trade this year. Although China and Thailand significantly increased exports of processed products in 2004 it was Brazil that largely benefited from its competitors' losses in key markets.
