Over the last year, Egyptian exporter Belco has been investing heavily in new production areas for its table grape variety Early Sweet. The primary reason for this investment is that the variety is harvested 7-10 days earlier than the company's othergrapes, allowing Belco to enter the market earlier. In addition, the company is increasing its investment in strawberries, for which it has allocated a new 5ha production area. As for export markets, Belco is currently adopting a strategy of diversification. "We are now diversifying the markets that we send to in order to avoid relying too heavily on the UK and western Europe," says product manager Amr EI-Beltagy. "So we are now expanding in Russia, the Ukraine, Asia and the Middle East, including the Egyptian local market. The demand in our main markets in western Europe is currently quite steady, but the real potential right now lies elsewhere.
