Cation exchange equilibria, interlayer spacing, andwater content were determined for the Na-bentonite MX-80equilibrated with 11 5.9N model solutions. The model solutionswere constant in K and Ca content and varied with respect to Naand Mg content. Analysis of cation exchange equilibria indicatedthe sorption of univalent chloro complexes of the type MCI+(M=Mg, Ca), the proportion in relation to sorbed Mg2+ or Ca2+decreasing with increasing solution content of Mg in relation toNa. Interlayer spacing and total water content of compactedbentonite samples increased with increasing Mg content.Absolute numbers for pore water and interlayer water contentstill need to be confirmed by additional experiments.
