The workshop held in Courmayeur and the presented papers allowed the formulation of research needs, which are quoted below in a telegraphic style. Only the main topics are listed, according to different categories, in order to orientate the future research in this field. Assessment of the importance of valley formation processes on the incidence of large landslides and their post-failure velocity. This includes age dating, the effects of geological environment, glaciations, long term valley formation processes by uplift and down-cutting of streams, and stress relief resulting from these processes.
