Ground engineering spoil: practices of disposal and reuse

This paper describes a CIRIA research projectabout the management of spoil from ground excavation andpresents some of its results. The research included a survey byquestionnaire of 32 recently completed and current constructionprojects, the analysis of the replies, and the more detailed study ofsix of the projects. The resulting CIRIA report also includes areview of the legal framework for dealing with waste andguidance about the options for reusing or recycling spoil orminimising the amount that is disposed as waste. This paper,however, presents only the survey results and lessons from the case studies.
