Lead removal from contaminated marine clay by electrokinetic soil decontamination

This paper reports the remediation of marine claycontaminated with lead by electrokinetics. A series ofelectrokinetic decontamination experiments including variableconditions such as operation duration, electrical current,concentration of lead and applications of three differentchemicals were performed to demonstrate the efficiency of leadremoval from natural marine clay sampled in Korea. Theexperiment results showed that the amounts of hydrogen ions andelectroosmtic water flow transported from anode to cathodeincreased with increasing in the operating duration and theapplied electrical current, and with decreasing the initialconcentration of lead. The efficiency of havy metal removal fromthe contaminated soil was increased with increasing in theoperating duration the applied electrical current, and thedecreased with increasing in the operating duration, of lead. Theefficiency of heavy metal removal from the contaminated soilwas increased with increasing in the operating duration, theapplied electrical current and the initial lead concentration. Thechemicals used as depercipitating, complexing and solubilizingagents were efficient in removal of heavy metals from the soil asan auxiliary method in electrokinetic decontamination.
