Dynamic sampling techniques in groundinvestigation have been used in continental Europe for manyyears. In the UK the use of this sampling method has increasedrapidly over the last few years and has new become an establishedmethod for taking samples for the assessment of contaminationpotential. This widespread use has been due to the cost-effectiveness, flexibility and speed for operation. Dynamicsampling has also a number of health and safety advantagesrelative to the conventional investigation techniques (e. g., trialpitting and light cable percussive boring) that have historicallybeen used in the UK for investigating potentially contaminatedland. The method can also be used for the installation of a varietyof instrumentation including piezometers and gas monitoringwells. This paper reviews the capability and limitations ofdynamic sampling as used in the UK and discusses the advantagesand disadvantages of the technique. A number of case historiesare presented to illustrate its operation.
