Balancing Conflicting Requirements by Design

The days when designers were concerned, if ever they were, with solely technical challenges are certainly gone. Increasingly there is the need for better products services, lower life cycle costs, faster time to market, disposal and sustainable production; the design task has become more interdisciplinary. This paper describes some of the issues facing a designer, particularly in the aerospace industry, and by some examples illustrates some recent issues and how they were resolved.
