In defining the elements of well integrity, a typical engineer might include corrosion evaluation, actions to reduce metal loss, the assembly of downhole tubulars, attempts to mitigate casing collapse, mechanical filtering or a focus on drilling strategies. In today's environment of integrated reservoir lifecycle management, is this focus too narrow? Many components of wellbore integrity are determined earlier in the exploration and production process. Here, the problems of wellbore instability, such as lost circulation and fracturing, sand production, temperature variation and changes in borehole water quality, can often be pre-empted. And no well operates in isolation. Wells not located or operated correctly can affect the performance of offset wells.
