VIOLENCE AND POWER STYLES IN YOUNG COUPLES

The objective of this study was to analyze the relation between power styles and violence, as well as the differences according to sex. This study was transversal. correlational type, and auto report questionnaires were used. The sample was not a non probabilistic one per quota of 94 subjects between 17 and 26 years old, and who lived in the metropolitan area of Monterrey (43 men and 51 women). They needed to know reading and writing, and to have had a couple relation. The results found in committed violence indicates us that there are only differences between men and women at sexual violence level (Z= -2.06, p<0.05), regarding the suffered violence, there were no difference in any of the levels (p>0.05). Likewise, in the power styles there were no gender differences. However, there is a relation between the styles of authoritarian power and aggressive-evasive, both in committed and suffered violence. These results are discussed.
