Optimization of Seed Rate for Mat Type Nursery Raised for Machine Transplanting

Studies were conducted at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra campus of University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka, during 2008-09 and 2009-10 to evaluate the different seed rate and mat material for the mat type of nursery grown for Asia rice transplanter. The observation on the effect of seed rate on plant height and root length shows no variation by using different mat material viz., perforated PVC, fertilizer bag (Plastic) and plastic sheets. Plant height was affected when the seed rate used was more than 1230g/m~2. While machine transplanting, missing hills occurred when the seed rate lower than 925g/m~2 and it was given maximum of 2.8 hills per square meter at the seed rate of 370g/m~2.Interaction effect between different seed rate and mat material were significant for plant height(cm) root length(cm) and missing hills per unit area.
