Evaluation of Various Axenic and Monoxenic Media on the Cultivation of Acanthamoeba

摘要

The species of Acanthamoeba are ubiquitous protozoans capable of causing opportunistic infections such as Acanthamoeba keratitis, fatal meningoencephalitis etc. in humans. Rapid laboratory diagnosis and chemotherapy are found to be tedious because ofthe complications involved in the isolation and cultivation of this organism using routine procedures. The present study evaluated the utility of conventional as well as modified media in the isolation and cultivation of Acanthamoeba from clinical specimens collected from eye. Growth of Acanthamoeba was noted to vary in the presence of different bacteria as feed supplements. Similarly, the type of sugar and amino acid was found to influence the over all growth of this amoeba.
