Performance and Economics of Rearing of Crossbred Pigs Fed Dried Bread Waste Based Diets

The present study was conducted at Pig Farm of All India coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Pigs, Livestock Farm, Adhartal, College of Veterinary Science & A.H., NDVSU, Jabalpur for a period of three months. A total of 30 weaned growing Large White Yorkshire crosses (LWY x Desi) were randomly assigned to five different groups, with six animals in each group. Composition of the diets was as follows; G_1 (Control); concentrate mixture-1, G_2; concentrate mixture-2 (75%) + bread waste (25%), G_3; concentrate mixture-3 (50%) + bread waste (50%), G_4; wheat bran (19.5%) + bread waste (66%) + GNC (10%) + fish meal (3%) + mineral mixture (1%) + common salt (0.5%), G_5; rice bran (50%) + bread waste (50%). All the diets were isoproteinous except G_5. Dry matter content of the fresh and dried bread waste was 65.24 and 93.25%, respectively. Crude protein content ofthe diets were 16.01±0.02,16.13±0.02,16.14±0.02,16.08±0.02 and 12.72±0.03%fortheG_1,G_2,G_3,G_4 and G_5 groups, respectively. Proximatecomposition (%) of diets was similar except for CP which was lowest (P<0.01) in G_5. Purposefully, the diet of G_5 was made as per farmers' practice of bread waste feeding which is deficient in protein. Digestibility coefficients of all the nutrients varied significantly (P<0.01) among the experimental groups. G_5 group had lowest digestibility for all the nutrients. Daily feed intake was significantly (P<0.05) different in the groups. Average daily gain was significantly (P<0.01) higher in group G_2 (0.377 g) and lowest in G_5 group (0.171 g). FCR (kg feed consumed /kg gain) was better (P<0.01) in G_2 group (4.35) and more in G_5 group (7.13). Blood parameters were similar in the experimental groups. The lowest cost (Rs.) of feed per kg body weight gain was observed in G_3 group (75.24) whereas highest value was observed in G_1 group (94.58). Bread waste could be economically included upto 50% in the diet of crossbred growing pigs.
