Metamorphism of thought about igneous rock textures

The standard interpretation of textures in igneous rocks was largely set over a century ago, when pioneering petrographers such as H.C. Sorby (1858) and L.V. Pirsson (1909) systematized the study of rocks in thin section and hand sample. Numerous classic works since then have built on this foundation (e.g. Johannsen 1931–1939; Williams et al. 1954), producing the framework used in classroom and practice alike. This issue contains a set of articles that challenge some of the fundamental assumptions and interpretations of this framework. As igneous petrologists, we wish to emphasize the similarities of processes between plutonic rocks and high-grade metamorphic rocks in the development of texture and the formation of features such as igneous modal layering and metamorphic layering.
