This Compact Clinical Guides serves well as an essential text for critical care and emergency nurses of all levels. It comprehensively reminds us of the basic concepts of pain and its management, and puts this into context of patient groups and aetiologies. The information presented is well evidenced allowing the practitioner to apply the knowledge to their own area of practice. The preparations (and guidelines) mentioned are American and often are not available in the UK so somewhat limits the application of all management plans, however the general principles are apparent. The use of case studies and questions at the end of the sections is great for allowing the practitioner to test their knowledge and draw on their own experiences.
