Occurrence of arsenic in groundwater and its relation to aquifer sediment characteristics in Murshidabad district, West Bengal

Widespread occurrence of arsenic in groundwater of the Bengal Delta Plain (BDP) covering parts of West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh is one of the serious environmental health hazards in the world. Under suitable redox condition, at some places, arsenic in alluvial sediments is released into the groundwater, overstepping the permissible limit (>50ppb; BIS, 1991).
