Different Culture Media on Growth and Sporulation of Phytophthora capsici

Phytophthora capsici is of great economic importance and is known as betelvine foot and leaf rot organism. Dastur (1925) had reported the disease for the first time in India from Maharastra and recorded 80% losses in betelvine plantations. Chaurasia and Mishra (2000) reported that in certain years losses due to phytophthora disease compelled the professional betelvine growers to change over to other crops or business to earn their livelihood. Despite description of the fungus, little information is available on its biology, including environmental requirements for growth and sporulation (Tsao et al., 1988 and Manohara and Sato, 1992).This information will be valuable to further mycological and pathological research on the fungus and disease, including development of measures for disease management. The present study was conducted to see the effect of culture media on mycelial growth and sporangial production of P. capsici.
