Relative Susceptibility of Groundnut Varieties to Groundnut Bruchid, Caryedon serratus in Storage

Groundnut, Arachis hypogaea (Linn.), is the 13th most important food crop and fourth most important source of edible oil in the world. The crop is susceptible to the attack of many insect pests during storage. Out of 100 species of insect pests attacking the stored groundnut, pod bruchid Caryedon serratus (Olivier) is a major cosmopolitan pest of economic importance (Singh and Ansari, 1991). It is the only pest, which infests both pods and kernels of groundnut. C. serratus caused 20% loss on a periodof five months of storage of groundnut pods in Andhra Pradesh (Dick, 1987). The extent of damage was recorded as 77.1% in pods and 67.8% in kernels by Kumari et al. (2002) and 50-70 % in pods and 80-85% in kernels by Devi and Rao (2000). Pattanaik and Singh (2008) evaluated eight groundnut varieties for their resistance to C. serratus under laboratory conditions and indicated lower preference for egg laying in Kadiri 3 and also found to be least preferred based on parameters viz. larval duration (46.7days), number of pupae (20.7) and adults developed (20).
