The variety robusta, the much maligned coffee bean, has evolved over the years from being a poor cousin of the arabica, from being considered a "trash" coffee, to the present status of being a coffee with distinctive and acceptable cup quality character -istics. Today, the quality of this variety of coffee has improved to such an extent that it is used even as a 'stand alone' in many Asian countries.
