The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) is the most serious pest of coffee all over the world. It has caused considerable losses in various Central African countries were it is endemic and in countries to which is has beenintroduced. This pest was first noticed in India during February 1990 on a few plantations in The Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu. It has now spread to almost all the coffee growing areas in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
