Leading ports in the Middle East and South Asia (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) mainly posted solid increases in their container throughput volumes last year. However, infrastructure weaknesses, particularly landside, the fall-out from the 'Arab Spring' and labour unrest, especially in India and Bangladesh, meant some facilities failed to meet expectations. Nonetheless, the potential in the region is viewed by many analysts as being huge as the ingredient for strong economic growth and a higher level of participation in international trade are firmly in place.
