When Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring back in 1962, the sceptics called her a deranged hippy and labelled the believers soothsayers. Time has proven that the believers were right to believe ... a healthy environment is good for us all. Australia is lucky in that people have not had all that long to stuff things up. Dawn is still met - in most parts at least - with noisy birdsong. In much of Europe and the United States, pesticides have ensured that this is no longer the case (the premise of Carson'sbook). But in many respects, Australia is now on the edge of an ecological cusp, so it is wise for the nation's population, particularly those who put food and drink on the table, to re-evaluate how they do things. Carson's book was a landmark - it lifted the lid on the pesticide industry and changed the way people thought about dangerous chemicals in the food chain - though many refuted her claims, calling her an 'extremist' and 'hysterical'.
